January, 2016

Dear Athletes and Coaches,

Canada DanceSport ( CDS), CDS Regional members DanceSport BC (DSBC), DanceSport Alberta (DSAB), Ontario DanceSport (ODS), DanceSport Quebec (DSQ), and DanceSport Atlantic (DAA) as well as Canada DanceSport Professional Division (CDS PD) would like to inform you that:

1.      As long as an athlete has a membership with one of the above Regional Associations, the athlete is welcome to compete in any of our Recognized Competitions. CDS does not restrict an athlete from having a membership card with another dance organization nor does it restrict athletes from competing in non-recognized events. No sanctions or suspensions will be applied to the athlete.

2.        CDS & CDS PD do not restrict its adjudicators from adjudicating non-recognized events. No suspensions will be imposed on adjudicators who judge on the same panel with any other adjudicator no matter which association they have membership with. We will not restrict adjudicator freedom to work anywhere they choose.

 3.      CDS believes in freedom of choice and has fought on behalf of athletes, coaches, and adjudicators for this right.
Please feel free to share this with your fellow athletes, coaches, and adjudicators.

Best Regards

Competitions – 2014/2015 ODS Recognized Competitions:

This year we have sanctioned the following events, three of which ODS produces:

On November 8, 2014, ODS executive organized & ran the Ontario Open DanceSport Championships at the Thornhill Community Centre, in Thornhill, Ontario. This event was the first hosted by ODS at this venue and it was well-attended.

On February 1, 2015, Igor & Elena Nikon hosted their second annual Open Winter Ball, presented by his Studio, DanceMania. This year it included the following WDSF events, WDSF Open Junior Standard & Latin, WDSF Open Youth standard & Latin, WDSF Open Under 21 Standard & Latin WDSF Open Adult Standard & Latin, WDSF Open Senior 1 Standard & Latin, WDSF Open Senior ll Standard & Latin and WDSF Open Senior lll standard. As well as all the other syllabus events. Igor had many young competitors entered into all categories, as well as show dances by various dance studios in the Toronto area. Because it was also a WDSF event he had judges from Ontario, USA, Quebec, Slovenia and Israel.

On February 21, 2015, the annual Ontario Closed Championships was held at the International Plaza Hotel, in Toronto, organized by the ODS executive. Even though we had a major snow storm, the event was a complete sell out and all competitors, as well as spectators loved this venue. This event is ODS’s official qualifier for the 2015 CCC in Calgary, Alberta.

On Sunday, May 24, 2015, Ontario DanceSport, (ODS), ran its third annual Champions of Tomorrow at the West

Way Club, in Toronto. This is a competition that is for Newcomers to Pre-Championship level dancers. This year, at the request of some Senior Championship level dancers requested that I put on a Senior Open and they would all attended, because of the 3 outside judging panel of Fabio Bosco, (Italy) Glen Weiss (USA) and Yelena Vesnovskaya, (USA), who they wanted to dance in front of. I granted their request and put this event on but unfortunately not only did they not enter to dance at it but even decided to not even come as spectators to support it. The judges noticed their absence and voiced their opinion to me how disappointed they were with these seniors. Even the ones who requested me to put this event on didn’t dance in it. Needless to say we had no Ontario Seniors in it but did have two from Quebec and one from Spain. The Champions of Tomorrow was again well-attended and we received many welcome congratulations from those in attendance as this is something that many of the couples wanted to see in our area.

On June 7, 2015, Igor & Elena Nikon hosted their first Toronto Grand Ball, presented by his Studio, DanceMania. It was well attended and held Championship level and all syllabus events. Igor had many young competitors entered into all categories, as well as show dances by various dance studios in the Toronto area.

Award of Distinction

This year’s Award of Distinction was again awarded at the Ontario Closed Championships on February 21st. This year’s well deserved recipients were Igor & Elena Nikon, who over the years have done a lot for DanceSport, in Ontario. They were very surprised and pleased recipients.

2016 Canadian Closed Amateur Championships – March 18 & 19, 2016

ODS will be hosting the 2016 Canadian Closed Amateur Championships to be held in Toronto, Ontario, March 18-19, 2016, and hope to have the full support of all of our competitors, as well as spectators. We are still looking for support from sponsors for various items ( medals, flowers, program, reception, gift bags etc) as an event of this nature is very costly. Any one who has a background organizing big events and are interested in being on the CCC organizing committee please contact me.

8. ODS is a true Sports association! ODS (formerly known as OADA) has done this work on your behalf as unpaid volunteers for almost 60 years.

Please remember to renew your ODS membership since ODS is “Your Association”.

I would like to thank the ODS executive for their dedication and hard work in working for DanceSport in Ontario this past year.

ODS is still looking for a person experienced in computers to help with competition registration.

Reminder that the Ontario Open Championship will be held on October 24, 2015 at the Thornhill Community Centre.
