Singles competitions:
Here though are the criteria that all “Singles”
competitions must follow in Ontario for the present
time.
For the purpose of understanding the “single”
refers to the judged dancer
The “partner” refers
to the partner not being judged.
All “singles” competitions must:
- Be run under
OADA rules including the dress code and dance level
for the “single” dancer
- Must be the
correct number of dances for the level
- Must either
be only International Style or only American Style
not mixing of the two styles in the same event
- Both the
“single” and the “partner”
must be members of OADA
- “Single”
can not compete in a level lower than what they
have currently on their membership card
- Single
boys & singles girls will compete in the same
event therefore the number will go on the “Single”
back even if it is a female. If there are enough
entries to separate it into male & female events
you may.
- These
events will only be held in lower categories- Silver
being the highest level held ( we can discuss this
issue after the first few competitions if there
proves there is a need)
- The
competitive dancer dancing with the “judged
dancer” must be only Juvenile or Junior age
– therefore must be 15 or younger
- This
event will only be for Juveniles & juniors members.
(again we can discuss this issue after this idea
has been tried and if there is a need for adding
youth)

Message
from OADA President:
To all competitors, please, in future, try and do
your tanning (Bronze spraying)at home prior to coming
to the event, at the Ramese Shrine or for that matter
any competition event. If this is not completely possible
then please make sure you bring with you some type
of sheet to place over the floor before applying the
tanning, as it made a complete mess of the ladies
change room floor on Saturday evening. As I have mentioned
in the past, at this moment this is the only venue
we current have and we do not want to loss it. Also,
it was found Saturday morning that someone decide
to spray black shoe polish on their latin or ballroom
shoes, on the carpet, in the main lobby, again without
putting anything down. Please do this outside or at
home before coming to the event. I am sure you wouldn't
do this in your own home without putting down any
covering.
Thank you
Gord Brittain, OADA President.

Message from President
Increase to Ticket Sales
Unfortunately, OADA has had to increase, by $5.00,
the price of our ticket sales for the Ontario Closed
Championships and future OADA run events, due to increasing
costs and overall expenses. Some of these expenses
are to cover the increase in Hall rental, judges fees,
travel expenses for out of town judges, the hiring
of security personnel, etc.
In addition, recently at the October, 2007, Ontario
Open Championships, some individuals decided to damage
areas of the Ramese Shrine, by spraying fire extinguisher
chemicals on the floors and walls in rooms which were
out of bounds to them. Because of this, we have been
charged an additional clean up fee and have had to
agree to hire security guards, again an additional
cost, which should not have been needed.
We have always tried to keep the cost of our ticket
sales down and have not had an increase in ticket
sale prices for a number of years.
Thanks you for your understanding in this matter.
Yours in dancing,
Gord Brittain

Competitors,
the IDSF has decided to be very strict in their enforcement
of the dress code. No warnings will be given. According
to Heinz Spaeker (Oct. 2nd 2007), the IDSF Sports
Director, “the biggest breaches of the rules
relate to the use of skin coloured panties, open dresses
of more than 5 cm in the hip area and, open dresses
in the breast area. Please consider that adjudicators
of DanceSport Competitions concentrate on your performance
and not on your costumes! If you are good enough,
you can win in a very basic but elegant outfit. If
you feel that you need an outfit that is not accepted
under the rules, then you are questioning you own
abilities as competitors.” Therefore OADA will
be also strictly enforcing this particular portion
of the dress code. Please check the OADA web site
for the complete dress code. If in doubt please contact
either Paulina Cheng or myself for clarification not
your coach.

Dear Studios & Amateurs,
I just want to remind everyone that
if you have any amateurs who may be trying out for
this Toronto Production of Dirty Dancing, that by
definition of “Loss of Amateur Status”,
as defined by OADA & CADA, - CADA rule: 8.03 “An
amateur is one who does not earn his livelihood from
participation in Dancesport”.
As this is a major production, performing
in Toronto for many months, OADA executive, at our
last executive meeting, consider this to be a professional
act, and as such, open to professionals only, and
therefore any amateur, taking part in such a production,
would lose their amateur status, as they would in
fact be earning their livelihood from this type of
stage production.
If you know of any amateurs that may
be considering this production work, please let them
know of this ruling.
Regards, Gord Brittain

July 2006
Message from New President
As my first official message as the
newly elected President of OADA, I would like to acknowledge
and welcome to all the OADA membership your newly
elected OADA Board of Directors.
Gord Brittain – President
Dave Stokes – Vice-President
Treasurer – Dave Winn
Secretary – Diane List
Membership – Paulina Cheng
Entertainment – Annette Morgan
Dance Scene Editor – Henri List
Publicity – Margaret Law
Webmasters – Candy Leung & Nixon Wu
On behalf of the OADA members, I wish
to thank Andrew and Kasia Wajzer for the excellent
work that they have done for the past number of years
as members of the Board but especially for the outstanding
contribution that they have made to OADA as Entertainment
Co-chairs. Their efforts have culminated in the organizing
of the Ontario Open and Closed competitions twice
a year and have ensured sold-out events each time
they organized any of the competitions. Their participation
as members of the organizing committee of the 2006
Canadian Closed definitely has not gone unnoticed
and has been most appreciated by all who attended
the event. They however made the organizing of competitions
a family affair and received much support from Teresa
and Magda. Thanks to all four of them for all of their
contribution to OADA.
I would like to take this opportunity
to thank John Trommelen, Past President of OADA, for
all his hard work and dedication while serving on
the OADA board in many capacities over the last number
of years. John decided that after twelve years on
the OADA executive that it was time to take a break
from the administration and politics of competitive
ballroom dancing. Even though John has retired from
the OADA executive, I know we will continue to see
him and Linda on the competitive dance floor and I
personally want to wish him all the best and my thanks
for his many dedicated years as a board member.
Visit the website, at www.ontariodancesport.com
which has been completely redesigned and updated by
Candy Leung and Nixon Wu and update yourself on all
the competitions and OADA news or re-familiarize yourself
with the bylaws, rulebook and newly changed dress
code.
As a reminder to competitors, please
do not fail to obtain OADA’s permission to perform
dance demonstrations or one-time shows, in order to
protect your amateur status and submit your remuneration
to the OADA Treasurer to be held in trust to be used
for dance related expenses. Also provide receipts
for such expenses when you request re-
imbursement from the Treasurer.
Effective July 1st, 2006 as per agreement
with the newly formed Canadian Dancesport Federation
(CDF);
Amateur competitors are advised that
competing or participating in any competitions not
sanctioned by CADA, a CADA Regional organization,
the British Dance Council or an IDSF-affiliated Federation
will result in a one year suspension from all registered
Canadian and Foreign competitions.
Note to all members: E-mail addresses
Could you please send to either Paulina
Cheng, Membership Director, or myself, your e-mail
addresses as we would like to keep all of you advised
of any unsanctioned/registered competitions, as well
as the “new periodical CADA e-letter”.
Your e-mails will not be used for any other purpose
than keeping you, our members, fully aware of all
that is taking place in the dance world.
To all competitors intending on competing
outside of Canada, please let me know, before doing
so, to make sure it is a recognized sanctioned/registered
event and, also, please let us know of your results,
especially the Championship level competitors, for
we can post them on the OADA web site.
